Viiv : Intel enters the fight for the living room

not quite Steve Jobs

not quite the Mac Mini

in the same league as Front Row

Quote:
"What consumers tell us they want is online content on that big screen in their living room ... from the couch, from the bed. We need to intergrate the TV capabilities, the PC capabilities, and the Internet experience.

"What is Viiv? A combination of hardware and softwawre that delivers a new media experience."
nothing new

Quote:
All of these systems are available either today, or in the next few weeks. Prices start at below 900 dollars."
not cheaper than the Mac Mini

Quote:
"Today on Viiv at its launch, there are 2 million songs, 100,000 music videos, 10,000 TV shows ... Welcome to The New Normal."
that is a *lot* of content. Apple, beware

Any season of any classic TV show in gray goodness beats trash TV, hands down! Munsters, Betty Boop, Happy Days, you name it. A musical simile: Bach can kick Britney's ass up and down high street, anytime.

Quote:
TV is called a medium, because it is neither rare nor well done.

[edit]

Rapport à la cuisson du steak: Rare: saignant; Medium; à point; Well done: bien fait...

Apple TV: wait and sue
Quote:
For worse, the online media market continues to fracture into the haves and the have nots - those that have partnered with Apple and those that have not.

Media companies baffling the public with their ineptitude is nothing new. Apple had to drag the labels kicking and screaming to iTunes. Now, Apple has had to show the mogul crowd how to do a subscription service right by this week offering a discount on TV shows (The Daily Show and The Colbert Report) and letting consumers keep their programs. Why Napster, Real and the RIAA think making music disappear at the end of an expensive subscription will prove attractive is anyone's guess.

With that in mind, the media giants who have partnered with Apple - particularly for TV downloads - must thank God that Steve Jobs exists.

The pigopolists would never figure this stuff out on their own. They would never have agreed to meet in one place - iTunes - without the charismatic Jobs showing them the way. Companies like ABC and NBC would have taken years to push their TV shows onto the interweb at a somewhat sensible price.

Voici un post assez hilarant sur le blog de Wil Shipley, un développeur indépendant qui à fait partie de l'équipe The Omni Group, responsable des excellents OmniGraffle et OmniOutliner, et qui développe actuellement Delicious Library, excellent titre également:

Wil Shipley wrote:
This Post is Microsoft Enhanced (TM).
Ok, look, I know this is a family blog (What exactly does that mean, really? That Dad reads the blog aloud to his 2.5 kids as he smokes a pipe in his easy chair with his hair all full of brillcreme?), so I don't want to get too ribald, but when I was a kid there were only two kinds of condoms, regular and with bumps, "enhanced for her pleasure."

This apparently meant embedding grains of sand in the latex. I remember that, growing up, I had seen condoms and had read Where Did I Come From? (hippie parents), but had no idea how these grains of sand were meant to enhance sex, even the sort of smooshy-gooshy idea I had of sex back then.

Honestly, I'm 36 now and still have no idea what the hell they were thinking. I don't know if they sell those condoms any more. If they do, I'd like to caution my younger viewers: I've never met a female whose response wasn't: "OUCH! SON OF CHRIST! WHAT THE FRAK! WHY WOULD SOMEONE PUT GRAINS OF SAND IN THAT FRAKKING THING?" (Only, without all the BSG talk.)

I think of the phrase "enhanced for her pleasure" every time I boot up my stupid digital video recorder (DVR), because somehow Microsoft managed to talk my cable monopoly into selling me a box that constantly, on every screen, in the upper-right corner, says, "Microsoft Enhanced." [...]

CyTV is a streaming solution for elgato's EyeTV family of TV tuners. It allows you to watch TV and recorded programs over a local network (wired or wireless) or the internet.
