Rumble Fish - F.F. Coppola - 1983
''Rumble Fish'' concerns two brothers, one called Rusty-James (Matt Dillon) and the other the Motorcycle Boy (Mickey Rourke). In the unidentified city where Rusty- James still lives, his brother is regarded as a born leader, a mythic figure, a heroic veteran of gang warfare. Rusty-James, by contrast, doesn't have a real gang to follow him or a real battle to fight. In awe of his much more clever brother, he isn't sure how he can follow in the Motorcycle Boy's footsteps. Their father, a benign drunk played by Dennis Hopper, isn't much help to either of them, and there's nowhere else for Rusty-James to turn.To the extent that ''Rumble Fish'' has a story, that's about it. However, the narrative is not a first concern of Mr. Coppola's here. From the first scenes in which a sky of fast-rolling clouds is contrasted with some graffiti about the Motorcycle Boy, the film is a melange of wildly overblown imagery.
